(25/06/2026, 17:00)

New materials can help tackle climate change, improve healthcare, power cleaner technologies and create possibilities we have not yet imagined. They can also lead to more extraction, pollution, waste, inequality and consequences that only emerge years later.

So, do we still need to invent new materials?

In this two-hour public mock trial, students will put that question on trial. After two days of research, expert interviews and deliberation, they will present a semi-scripted Tribunal for Future Generations featuring competing arguments, evidence, testimony, speeches, deliberation and debate.

You will hear the case for continued invention, encounter the arguments against it, and consider perspectives spanning science, engineering, sustainability, economics, ethics and society. By the end of the evening, the evidence will have been heard, the arguments tested and a final public judgement delivered.

This event is for anyone curious about materials, sustainability, innovation, ethics, public policy or the future of science and technology. No specialist knowledge is required, and you do not need to have taken part in the preceding preparation programme. Just bring yourself, take your seat and prepare to hear the future of materials put on trial.

Sign up now.

This activity and event have been made possible thanks to funding from the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Topological Design and the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Formulation Engineering for Net Zero.

<a10:updated>2026-06-17T16:25:50+01:00</a10:updated>

Tribunal for Future Generations: Do we still need to invent new materials? (23/06/2026, 09:00)

New materials have transformed healthcare, energy, transport, infrastructure and digital technology. They have also brought new extraction, pollution, waste, inequality and risks that were not always obvious when they were first introduced. Over three days, you will investigate a deceptively simple question: should we keep inventing new materials, or concentrate on using the ones we already have more wisely?

Working through a deliberative process, you will explore the issue from scientific, technical, environmental, social, economic, ethical and philosophical perspectives. You will interview invited experts, test competing arguments, debate the difficult trade-offs and work with the group to turn your findings into a public mock Tribunal for Future Generations.

Book your place now.

What to expect

Everyone will take part in the interviews, deliberations and overall shaping of the event. You can also choose a more specific role: writing or presenting the closing pleas, producing video or digital content, developing costumes, music or staging, documenting the process, supporting communications, or helping to run the final event.

On day one, you will meet the group, get to grips with the question and begin interviewing experts. Day two is where the case starts to take shape, as you continue the interviews and build the tribunal. Day three is devoted to final preparation, rehearsal and putting the whole thing on in front of a public audience.

Who is this for?

No specialist knowledge is required. This would suit anyone curious about science, sustainability, innovation, ethics, public debate, performance, communication or how difficult collective decisions are actually made. Bring a laptop or tablet if you have one, although this is not essential. Participants should be available for the full three-day programme and final public tribunal.

Reserve the date in your diary to attend this event, specifically organised to widen your awareness of the variety of careers beyond an academic one. Completing a PhD or post-doc gives you a wealth of transferable skills which can be employed in a wide variety of roles outside of traditional academia.

The programme is a chance to attend a variety of presentations, take part in direct discussions with speakers, meet fellow researchers across the three STEM colleges (CMH, EPS, and LES) and enjoy a hotel lunch. Speakers include those from fields such as scientific writing, software development, lab science, university professional services, and IP/ patent law. Also included in the days agenda will be a session on how to get your CV into shape and networking.

Feedback from previous attendees on why they found this beneficial:

“Practical insights and authentic information about career paths”

“Attending this event has introduced me to so many more career options than I realised existed. It also made me excited about my future career prospects again, rather than dreading thinking about it!”

“Learning additional things for industry positions we would normally not hear”

Whether you want to freelance, build a creative career or simply stand out online, personal branding is about more than logos and aesthetics, it’s about how people remember you.

This session explores how storytelling can help you communicate your skills, values and personality in a way that feels authentic and true to you.

You'll leave understanding why storytelling is not a lost art, why being yourself is your superpower and how to feel confident when telling others about what you do.
