Take a stand against domestic abuse - join our Reach Respect training, deisgned specifically for University students.

Violence against women and girls is a national crisis, with experiences of domestic abuse devastatingly common in our society. Did you know that 1 in 4 women over 16 will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime?

Everyone deserves a relationship free from abuse. That's why Women's Aid are offering free training for university students.

This training aims to develop the knowledge and skills to understand and recognise domestic abuse, build healthy relationships, and be a safe, active bystander.

Through this session you will:

Recognise the signs of domestic abuse: understand the types of abuse and coercive control, and learn what makes a relationship healthy and respectful.
Be a supportive active bystander: get equipped with the knowledge to know if you're witnessing abuse, and confidently and safely support that person, helping to create a safer community for all.

These sessions are open to all students of all genders, and may be of particular interest to students conisdering careers in healthcare, social work teaching, or supporting others.

To celebrate UoB Xtra, we're offering FREE bike valeting for UoB cyclists on Monday 8 and Thursday 11 June. The valeting includes cleaning, relubrication of the drivetrain, and minor tweaks to brakes and gears. Major work is not part of the valet service - the team will recommend if any further servicing or repairs are needed, and these can be booked in for a later date.

If you'd like to take up this opportunity for a sparkling and smooth-running bike, here's how the sessions will run:

Drop your bike off at the Gear Up cycle repair shop in Staff House Square from 08:00
Bikes will be valeted between 10:00-15:00, with 30 bikes valeted free each day
Bikes must be collected between 15:00-16:00. We cannot store your bike longer than that, so please collect promptly!

Although no prior bookings are needed, free valeting is limited to 30 bikes per day and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, so please come early to avoid disappointment! Free valeting is limited to one bike per staff member or student - no children's bikes.

RLSS UK’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED) course teaches candidates how to give effective CPR and use an AED – meaning you feel confident if an emergency occurs and need to deliver lifesaving CPR procedures either in public or the workplace.

You will need to attend the whole day, which will include a verbal theory assessment, along with practical.

Please bring comfortable clothing. You will receive a certificate on completion of the course.

The Emergency First Aid at Work course is a one day first aid qualification that covers a range of CPR and emergency first aid skills.

In 2015, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provided a comprehensive plan for a sustainable world by 2030. However, progress is not happening fast enough, and we urgently need to increase our collective abilities to face and work effectively with complex challenges. This is where inner development comes in - changing our thinking and behaviour to catalyse the transformation that is needed.

Reflect on the ways the climate crisis impacts our inner lives, and vice versa. This workshop, led by the Birmingham Institute for Sustainability and Climate Action, will explore the Inner Development Goals (IDG) structure as a catalyst for sustainability.

It's Campus 3k - but on the water! Join our friends from the Raymond Priestley Centre, our very own outdoor education centre, for a brand new adventure on Birmingham's iconic canals.

After a short safety briefing, staff will guide and support you to paddle 3k in a canoe, seeing campus and surroundings from a whole new angle. Whether you're aiming for the fastest time of the day, or just want a gentle float and paddle, these hour-long sessions are suitable for absolute beginners. All equipment is provided.

Come alone, or with friends, and you'll soon be experiencing a whole different side of Brum.

The meeting point for these sessions will be in the Green Heart, where staff will then guide you to the canoes on the canal.

This workshop aims to equip you with practical tips on how to write a strong research funding or fellowship application.

As an academic in the twenty-first century, bidding for research funding is part and parcel of the day job. Wondrous Wander: UoB Bats and their habitats (19/05/2026, 17:00)

While our peregrine falcons are famous campus residents, we have others who (literally) shun the spotlight! Led by Sustainability and Environmental Officer Cai Lansdown, we will learn about the bat species that call the University home, how our Estates team monitor them, and related work Cai is doing as part of his apprenticeship project.

Starting at the Estates Maintenance Office (Y6 on the campus map), we will meet at 17:00, to start walking at 17:10. We will walk approximately 2.8 km around campus, over the following hour and a half. The walk will finish back at the Maintenance Office.

The walk is free of charge for staff and students, but please book your space, so we can gauge numbers.

Please note that spaces are limited, therefore we can only offer places to UoB staff and students.

Green Impact Lab Accreditation - volunteer auditor training (09/06/2026, 09:30)

Become a volunteer auditor with Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS UK) and the University of Birmingham. This training session will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to become a Green Impacts Lab Accreditation (GILA) auditor, with full training provided by SOS UK. with breaks and self-study time built in.

Following the training, you will spend some time reviewing the GILA work of staff who work in wet labs at the university and preparing questions to ask. You will then meet with the staff where you can ask questions and make final decisions on your audit, before feeding your results back to us. It's a great opportunity to view real-world implementation of sustainability in the lab environment and workplace, and build new skills in communications, analysis and team work.

The audits will mostly be in person, with some online, from the afternoon on Tuesday 9 June until the afternoon on Thursday 11 June, so you can put your new training into action straight away.

Experience of working in a laboratory will be helpful, although not essential.

We are committed to making our training as accessible as possible. If you have any requirements regarding accessibility, please let us know a week beforehand. Specifically, we can provide slides in advanced or in a particular format and suitable accessibility breaks. If you have any other requirements please let us know in the form below and we will try to meet those needs where possible. Please note, this training uses complex language and you will need to be able to understand English fluently to understand the training, and be able to communicate fluently with your assigned teams.

“Calling at Five Ways, University, Selly Oak, Bournville…”: this sequence familiar to cross-city line passengers was not always thus. Join the Sustainable Travel team to spy traces of abandoned stations and stops of the Birmingham West Suburban Line. We will also hear stories of other disused lines and stations in south Birmingham, including the recent resurrection of the Camp Hill line, on this tour exclusively for UoB students and staff.

Starting at North Gate, we will cover approximately 3.5 km over two hours. The walk will finish at Bournville. There is an option to leave the walk at Selly Oak for a shorter distance overall.

The Guild will be taking over campus to bring you a stand-out event, complete with fairground rides, street food, karaoke and so much more! This event is the perfect way to celebrate the end of the year, so prepare to have fun, sing your hearts out and dance the night away with your friends.

Tickets go on general sale from 17:00 on Wednesday 6 May and will be available on the Guild Tickets website.
