This session will provide you with information on how you can search and find different types of work experience. You’ll have the chance to hear from the Work Experience team about the different resources you can use to search for roles and how best to utilise them. We will also give you tips on how to make the most of your summer if you don't have any formal work experience lined up. There will be plenty of time to get your work experience related questions answered by an Work Experience Lead.

After the hour session, we will stick around in the Zoom room for another 30 minutes - this is optional time for you to spend some time chatting with us and/or searching for relevant work experience with the support of our team.

ACTionism is a film about the art of finding your people to take collective action. About collectively moving from passive consumers to active citizens. A story centred around doing things with others, not to others. The film follows Ellie Meredith on a journey from anxiety to action.

“School was a tricky time for me—as a neurospicy human, I hated being stuck in four walls all day. The mounting pressure of exams and anxiety became too much, and I crawled inside myself. Add to that cocktail a rising sense of climate anxiety, and it all felt completely overwhelming. I kept thinking about what I could do. The question itself was rooted in uncertainty about my own future—a future that felt like it was being mapped out for me. But what I really wanted was to get stuck in, to find my people. To feel less alone.”

“I found myself drawn to the work of Re-Action. At a time when most of the actions I was told to take to “save the planet” felt like joyless personal sacrifices—buying a reusable coffee cup—this kind of action felt different. It meant that there might be a way for me to take action alongside others, not as if I was on some solo mission to save the world.

And this film is the unravelling of where that led me next.”

It's Campus 3k - but on the water! Join our friends from the Raymond Priestley Centre, our very own outdoor education centre, for a brand new adventure on Birmingham's iconic canals.

After a short safety briefing, staff will guide and support you to paddle 3k in a canoe, seeing campus and surroundings from a whole new angle. Whether you're aiming for the fastest time of the day, or just want a gentle float and paddle, these hour-long sessions are suitable for absolute beginners. All equipment is provided.

Come alone, or with friends, and you'll soon be experiencing a whole different side of Brum.

The meeting point for these sessions will be in the Green Heart, where staff will then guide you to the canoes on the canal.

It covers some of the common mental health issues affecting young people, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and psychosis. Take a stand against domestic abuse - join our Reach Respect training, designed specifically for University students.

Violence against women and girls is a national crisis, with experiences of domestic abuse devastatingly common in our society. Did you know that 1 in 4 women over 16 will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime?

Everyone deserves a relationship free from abuse. That's why Women's Aid are offering free training for university students.

This training aims to develop the knowledge and skills to understand and recognise domestic abuse, build healthy relationships, and be a safe, active bystander.

Through this session you will:

Recognise the signs of domestic abuse: understand the types of abuse and coercive control, and learn what makes a relationship healthy and respectful.
Be a supportive active bystander: get equipped with the knowledge to know if you're witnessing abuse, and confidently and safely support that person, helping to create a safer community for all.

These sessions are open to all students of all genders, and may be of particular interest to students conisdering careers in healthcare, social work teaching, or supporting others.

Completing a PhD or post-doc gives you a wealth of transferable skills which can be employed in a wide variety of roles outside of traditional academia.

The programme is a chance to attend a variety of presentations, take part in direct discussions with speakers, meet fellow researchers across the three STEM colleges (CMH, EPS, and LES) and enjoy a hotel lunch. This engaging and practical session introduces students to the basics of British Sign Language (BSL) and Deaf awareness within healthcare environments.

Students will learn useful introductory signs, explore common communication barriers faced by Deaf patients, and develop a greater understanding of Deaf culture and accessibility within healthcare settings. The session will also look at practical strategies for improving communication confidence and creating more inclusive patient experiences.

No previous experience of BSL is required. The session is designed to be interactive, supportive, and discussion-based, with opportunities to practise signing throughout.

The training is delivered by Sign Together UK, a Deaf-led and lived-experience-informed British Sign Language training provider and Signature Accredited Centre working with organisations, universities, healthcare professionals, and public services across the UK.

This workshop is open to all, but is specifically designed for those who are aiming for careers in clinical healthcare settings.

The session will run 11:00-14:30, with 30 minutes of break within the session.

The film is an adaptation of Becky Albertalli's hugely popular YA novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and was chosen for the UoB Xtra outdoor cinema by the Guild of Students, as part of their Pride celebrations this June.

RLSS UK’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED) course teaches candidates how to give effective CPR and use an AED – meaning you feel confident if an emergency occurs and need to deliver lifesaving CPR procedures either in public or the workplace.

Become a volunteer auditor with Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS UK) and the University of Birmingham. This training session will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to become a Green Impacts Lab Accreditation (GILA) auditor, with full training provided by SOS UK, with breaks and self-study time built in.

Following the training, you will spend some time reviewing the GILA work of staff who work in wet labs at the university and preparing questions to ask. You will then meet with the staff where you can ask questions and make final decisions on your audit, before feeding your results back to us. It's a great opportunity to view real-world implementation of sustainability in the lab environment and workplace, and build new skills in communications, analysis and team work.

The audits will mostly be in person, with some online, from the afternoon on Tuesday 9 June until the afternoon on Thursday 11 June, so you can put your new training into action straight away.

Experience of working in a laboratory will be helpful, although not essential.

We are committed to making our training as accessible as possible. If you have any requirements regarding accessibility, please let us know a week beforehand. Specifically, we can provide slides in advanced or in a particular format and suitable accessibility breaks. If you have any other requirements please let us know in the form below and we will try to meet those needs where possible. Please note, this training uses complex language and you will need to be able to understand English fluently to understand the training, and be able to communicate fluently with your assigned teams.

No experience is required for this open workshop delivered in association with the Sonia Sabri Company, known for their exceptional dance and musical experiences rooted in Kathak and Indian classical music but drawing on contemporary influences.

All kinds of instruments (plus vocalists) are welcome. There will be some traditional South Asian instruments available to borrow, including Sitar, Harmonium, Tabla, and Dholak.

This event is presented in collaboration with the Race Equality Network.

Everyone deserves a relationship free from abuse. That's why Women's Aid are offering free training for university students.

This training aims to develop the knowledge and skills to understand and recognise domestic abuse, build healthy relationships, and be a safe, active bystander.

Through this session you will:

Recognise the signs of domestic abuse: understand the types of abuse and coercive control, and learn what makes a relationship healthy and respectful.
Be a supportive active bystander: get equipped with the knowledge to know if you're witnessing abuse, and confidently and safely support that person, helping to create a safer community for all.

To celebrate UoB Xtra, we're offering FREE bike valeting for UoB cyclists on Monday 8 and Thursday 11 June. The valeting includes cleaning, relubrication of the drivetrain, and minor tweaks to brakes and gears. Major work is not part of the valet service - the team will recommend if any further servicing or repairs are needed, and these can be booked in for a later date.

If you'd like to take up this opportunity for a sparkling and smooth-running bike, here's how the sessions will run:

Drop your bike off at the Gear Up cycle repair shop in Staff House Square from 08:00
Bikes will be valeted between 10:00-15:00, with 30 bikes valeted free each day
Bikes must be collected between 15:00-16:00. We cannot store your bike longer than that, so please collect promptly!

In 2015, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provided a comprehensive plan for a sustainable world by 2030. However, progress is not happening fast enough, and we urgently need to increase our collective abilities to face and work effectively with complex challenges. This is where inner development comes in - changing our thinking and behaviour to catalyse the transformation that is needed.

Reflect on the ways the climate crisis impacts our inner lives, and vice versa. This workshop, led by the Birmingham Institute for Sustainability and Climate Action, will explore the Inner Development Goals (IDG) structure as a catalyst for sustainability.

Fellowships and other Early Career Postdoc funding grants can be a great way to establish yourself as an independent researcher and set you up to apply for longer-term academic positions. They are, however, increasingly competitive.

This workshop aims to equip you with practical tips on how to write a strong research funding or fellowship application.

As an academic in the twenty-first century, bidding for research funding is part and parcel of the day job. In the first half of the workshop we'll be looking at identifying funding opportunities and writing techniques that can help you to put together a convincing bid. The second half will focus on a Q&A discussion with current academic staff who hold various postdoctoral fellowships, giving you the chance to ask any questions that you have.

Note: this event is focused on practical tips for current postgraduate researchers on writing research funding bids and fellowship applications; it will NOT cover applying for PhD funding.
