While our peregrine falcons are famous campus residents, we have others who (literally) shun the spotlight! Led by Sustainability and Environmental Officer Cai Lansdown, we will learn about the bat species that call the University home, how our Estates team monitor them, and related work Cai is doing as part of his apprenticeship project.

Starting at the Estates Maintenance Office (Y6 on the campus map), we will meet at 17:00, to start walking at 17:10. We will walk approximately 2.8 km around campus, over the following hour and a half. The walk will finish back at the Maintenance Office.

The walk is free of charge for staff and students, but please book your space, so we can gauge numbers.

Please note that spaces are limited, therefore we can only offer places to UoB staff and students.

Green Impact Lab Accreditation - volunteer auditor training (09/06/2026, 09:30)

Become a volunteer auditor with Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS UK) and the University of Birmingham. This training session will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to become a Green Impacts Lab Accreditation (GILA) auditor, with full training provided by SOS UK. with breaks and self-study time built in.

Following the training, you will spend some time reviewing the GILA work of staff who work in wet labs at the university and preparing questions to ask. You will then meet with the staff where you can ask questions and make final decisions on your audit, before feeding your results back to us. It's a great opportunity to view real-world implementation of sustainability in the lab environment and workplace, and build new skills in communications, analysis and team work.

The audits will mostly be in person, with some online, from the afternoon on Tuesday 9 June until the afternoon on Thursday 11 June, so you can put your new training into action straight away.

Experience of working in a laboratory will be helpful, although not essential.

We are committed to making our training as accessible as possible. If you have any requirements regarding accessibility, please let us know a week beforehand. Specifically, we can provide slides in advanced or in a particular format and suitable accessibility breaks. If you have any other requirements please let us know in the form below and we will try to meet those needs where possible. Please note, this training uses complex language and you will need to be able to understand English fluently to understand the training, and be able to communicate fluently with your assigned teams.

Building your academic profile during your PhD: Training & Development showcase (13/05/2026, 11:00)

This event looks at key things that you can do during your PhD to develop your academic profile, all based around free training and development initiatives run by the University of Birmingham.

Research Skills Adviser Lynne Harris will outline how you can start to build your academic research profile and visibility, including managing your online researcher profile.

Jamie Morris, Principal Educational Developer in the Educational Development Team, will outline teaching accreditations and other training that you can take advantage of during your PhD in relation to developing your teaching practice.

Lauren Deere from the Public Engagement with Research (PER) team will give some pointers on how you can get involved in public engagement during your PhD, including initiatives run by the University’s own PER team.

To sum up, PGR Careers Adviser Holly Prescott will discuss how these activities can be helpful in specific parts of the academic application and interview process.

“Calling at Five Ways, University, Selly Oak, Bournville…”: this sequence familiar to cross-city line passengers was not always thus. Join the Sustainable Travel team to spy traces of abandoned stations and stops of the Birmingham West Suburban Line. We will also hear stories of other disused lines and stations in south Birmingham, including the recent resurrection of the Camp Hill line, on this tour exclusively for UoB students and staff.

Starting at North Gate, we will cover approximately 3.5 km over two hours. The walk will finish at Bournville. There is an option to leave the walk at Selly Oak for a shorter distance overall.

Get another opportunity to join this popular guided tour from Old Joe to Selly Oak campus, learning about the connections between Quakerism and the early history of the University. Fellowships and other Early Career Postdoc funding grants can be a great way to establish yourself as an independent researcher and set you up to apply for longer-term academic positions. They are, however, increasingly competitive.

This workshop aims to equip you with practical tips on how to write a strong research funding or fellowship application.

As an academic in the twenty-first century, bidding for research funding is part and parcel of the day job. In the first half of the workshop we'll be looking at identifying funding opportunities and writing techniques that can help you to put together a convincing bid. The second half will focus on a Q&A discussion with current academic staff who hold various postdoctoral fellowships, giving you the chance to ask any questions that you have.

Postgraduate Researchers only

Note: this event is focused on practical tips for current postgraduate researchers on writing research funding bids and fellowship applications; it will NOT cover applying for PhD funding.

Managing the transition to a doctoral programme can be overwhelming. How do you leave UoB feeling like you got the most out of the experience? This workshop aims to help you navigate this, and set you up for success both during and beyond your time at Birmingham: whatever ‘success’ means for you.

The Researcher Development Framework (RDF) shows that a crucial part of being an effective researcher is taking ownership of your ongoing professional development. This workshop is designed to help you do just that: to get more out of your time at Birmingham rather than just cramming more in, and to help you achieve the development goals set in your Development Needs Analysis.

The programme will help you through a framework called Stanford Life Design (SLD): a model that uses the principles of Design Thinking to help you navigate life transitions and choices. The approach doesn't expect you to have everything figured out, but instead focuses on:

Understanding your values and what is important to you.
Designing a life that aligns with these.
Developing a mindset of curiosity and collaboration, to help you explore opportunities and make decisions when faced with uncertainty.
Learning from your peers.

The programme will help you:

Take ownership over mapping your own PhD journey.
Design your own UoB experience in ways that align with your interests and possible future goals.
Connect with other PGRs in a similar situation to you.

How do I get started with my dissertation? Where do I begin with searching the literature? How can I engage with my subject critically, and how do I communicate this in my writing? Three advisors from the Academic Skills Centre will give you some top tips for acing the final hurdle of your postgraduate degree and tackle your dissertation questions.

Join the Academic Skills Centre for a discussion about all-things dissertation, followed by a Q&A where you can ask any questions related to this topic.
