This talk aims to provide an overview of Bible translations in Brazil, with a focus on those produced by the Brazilian Bible Society (SBB). It will then consider the use of inclusive language in current translation projects, exploring attempts to incorporate such language into Bible translations. Finally, we will present covers of Brazilian Bible versions aimed at women, demonstrating efforts to maintain a stereotypically feminine image through the use of colours, designs and adjectives such as 'virtuous', 'of faith' and 'wise', among others. These materials are intended to stimulate discussions about translation as an interpretive and transformative process, in line with the hermeneutic approach as understood by Venuti (2020), Ricoeur (2011) and Gadamer (1999).
Keynote Speaker: Prof. Erica Lima: Érica Lima teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on translation and supervises Master's and Doctorate students. She holds a PhD in Languages from São Paulo State University, a M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (University of Campinas - Unicamp) and a Bachelor’s degree in French Translation also from São Paulo State University. Her research interests include feminist translation, translator education, translation and emotion.
This will be followed by a Postgraduate Research Symposium on Feminist and Religious Translation in the Asian Context.
